First-Time Visitor Guide to Las Vegas

A first-timer's guide to Las Vegas: how the Strip is laid out, the 21+ rules, tipping, resort fees, and what to book before you go.

New to Vegas? Here's everything you need to feel oriented before you land.

How the Strip is laid out

Las Vegas Blvd ("the Strip") runs about 4 miles, lined with mega-resorts. Downtown / Fremont Street is a separate, older area ~10 minutes north. Plan transport between them — see Getting Around Las Vegas.

The 21+ rules

You must be 21 to gamble or drink, and IDs are checked. Under-21s can stay in hotels and pass through casinos but can't stop on the gaming floor or sit at machines.

Tipping

Tipping is expected: $1–2 per drink, 18–20% in restaurants, a few dollars per bag, and $3–5+ for valet. Many cocktail servers comp drinks while you play — still tip.

Resort fees & parking

Most Strip hotels add a resort fee (typically $40–60/night, plus tax) on top of the room rate, and many charge for parking. Budget for these — details in Las Vegas on a Budget.

First-timer do's & don'ts

  • Do wear comfortable shoes — you'll walk more than you expect.
  • Do carry water, especially in summer.
  • Don't assume everything is walking distance.
  • Don't forget to factor resort fees into your budget.
