What are the best things to do in Las Vegas with kids?
1 answer
A dinner show with jousting horses, afternoon magic, the free fountains and circus acts, a wave pool, Springs Preserve and Omega Mart cover most ages. Below is our shortlist by age, from the pages we keep on each.
Under 8
- Tournament of Kings at Excalibur: a jousting dinner show, $75, under-3s free on a lap
- Popovich Comedy Pet Theater: $27, 2:30 p.m.
- Mystère at Treasure Island: $59, all ages, the best first Cirque
- Free circus acts at Circus Circus, Friday through Monday
- The Silverton's mermaid tank and the Flamingo's wildlife habitat
- M&M's World and the Hershey's store
- Mandalay Bay Beach's wave pool and lazy river in season (48-inch minimum for the waves)
Ages 5 to 12
- Mac King's 3 p.m. magic show at Excalibur ($45) and Mat Franco at the LINQ ($50)
- Springs Preserve: $18.95, Thursday to Monday, half a day
- Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay
- Omega Mart at AREA15, from about $45; go in the daytime
- The High Roller wheel, $24 by day
- Fremont Street's canopy show at the top of every hour from 6 p.m.; go early, since after 10 p.m. it is a drinking crowd
- A Red Rock or Hoover Dam morning
Teens
- Jabbawockeez ($92) and Michael Jackson ONE ($99, under 16 with an adult)
- BattleBots ($50, bring earplugs) and Piff the Magic Dragon (8 and up, $39)
- SkyJump off the STRAT, 14 and up
- Lee Canyon skiing in winter; 12 and under ski free
- The Wizard of Oz at Sphere: great, but $130 a head
Rules that shape the day
Under-21s can walk through a casino with you but cannot stop on the gaming floor. The county curfew keeps under-18s off the Strip without a parent after 9 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. Resort pools are family-friendly; every dayclub and Circa's Stadium Swim are 21 and over.
Where to stay: the south Strip (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, MGM Grand), tram-linked and closest to the airport. Budget roughly $25 to $100 per child per day for tickets, before food.
Age rules per show are in family-friendly shows, the practical rulebook in Las Vegas with kids, and the catalog filter at family shows.
