Is Shanghai Taste Worth It? Honest Review & What to Order

Shanghai Taste is where Las Vegas takes its soup-dumpling pilgrimages: chef-owner Jimmy Li — a James Beard semifinalist whose name keeps surfacing in the city's 2026 award conversations — folds three thousand-plus xiao long bao daily in an open display kitchen at Shanghai Plaza, alongside sheng jian bao and a tight Shanghainese canon.

The XLB arrive in baskets at $10-16, thin-skinned and broth-heavy in the proper Shanghai style, with the pan-fried sheng jian bao as the crackling counterpoint. Mains run $14-22; a full table eats at $20-30 a head, which explains both the national press and the line. The brand has since spread — a southwest Vegas location and two in Texas — but this Chinatown original remains the flagship.

The physics of fame: a tiny room, no reservations, first-come waits that build fast after 6pm, and an 11am-9pm window that closes earlier than Chinatown neighbors. Go at open or mid-afternoon, order more baskets than feels reasonable, and eat them immediately — XLB wait for no one.

Insider tip Order the XLB and the sheng jian bao together — steamed versus pan-fried is the whole tasting thesis — and eat immediately: the broth inside runs scalding, then cooling, and neither state waits. Doors at 11am; the line forms by noon.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the XLB special?

Chef Jimmy Li — a James Beard Best Chef: Southwest semifinalist — hand-folds more than 3,000 daily in the open kitchen: thin skins, generous broth, proper Shanghai style. It's the benchmark basket in the city.

How do I avoid the wait?

Arrive at the 11am open or between 2 and 5pm — no reservations exist, the room is small, and post-6pm waits build fast. If Chinatown is packed, the newer southwest Vegas location runs calmer.

What else should I order?

The sheng jian bao (pan-fried soup dumplings) as the crispy counterpart, plus Shanghainese staples — braised pork, wontons in chili oil. Mains run $14-22; a satisfying table lands $20-30 a head.

When is it open?

Daily 11am-9pm — note the early close relative to Chinatown neighbors. It sits in Shanghai Plaza at 4266 W Spring Mountain Rd, same plaza as China Mama.
