Is the Erotic Heritage Museum Worth It?

The Erotic Heritage Museum grew out of one of the stranger partnerships in American museum history: Methodist minister and sexologist Ted McIlvenna and adult-industry mogul Harry Mohney opened it together in 2008, a block west of the Strip. Billed as the world's largest erotic museum, it ranges from Peruvian erotic pottery and Qing-dynasty snuff bottles to a gallery devoted to Spanish fantasy artist Luis Royo, with some exhibits developed alongside research partners like the Kinsey Institute.

Curation is uneven by design — some rooms read like a research archive, others go for pure camp, and the building also holds a wedding chapel and the Jewel Box Theater, longtime home of Puppetry of the Penis. The bigger caveat is the setting: Sammy Davis Jr Drive is a plain industrial corridor behind the Fashion Show block, so arriving on foot feels nothing like the Strip, and a few corners of the museum show their age. Come with a couple of hours, an open mind, and no one under 18 in tow.

Is it actually educational, or just shock value?

Both, unevenly. Pieces like the antiquities collection are genuine museum material, and several exhibits were built with academic partners, while other rooms lean fully into provocation. Treat it as a curiosity cabinet rather than a Smithsonian and the mix works.

Can you walk there from the Strip?

Yes — it's roughly 15 minutes on foot from the Fashion Show Mall end of the Strip, but the route crosses a quiet industrial block with little foot traffic. After dark, most visitors are happier taking a rideshare straight to the door.
