Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

Spring Mountain Ranch is the green surprise under the Red Rock cliffs: a Nevada State Park half an hour west of the Strip where spring-fed lawns and cottonwoods sit against 3,000-foot sandstone walls. The historic working ranch at its heart passed through hands worth knowing: Chester Lauck of Lum & Abner, German actress Vera Krupp, and finally Howard Hughes. Volunteer docents open the 1940s ranch house on a variable schedule, and the entry fee is charged per vehicle - $10 with Nevada plates, $15 out-of-state, $2 to bike in - paid at the gate, cash safest.

Two things shape a visit. Hours track the seasons hard: summer runs 8 AM to 8 PM, but November through February the gate closes at 4:30 PM, and the trails shut an hour before the park does. And the old lake is gone as a swimming hole: Lake Harriet was drained in 2017 to protect the endangered Pahrump poolfish, so today the park is about picnics, trails and history, not water. From late May into September the lawn becomes the stage for Super Summer Theatre's open-air musicals (a separate ticket) - sunset shows under the cliffs that locals guard jealously. Pair the park with the adjacent Red Rock Canyon loop for the valley's best half day west.
