Golden Eagle Air Tour

The Golden Eagle Air Tour is Papillon's air-only helicopter flight from Las Vegas over the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. It runs roughly three and a half to four hours hotel-to-hotel, but only about 70 minutes of that is in the air; the rest is round-trip shuttle time between select Strip and Downtown hotels and Papillon's private heliport in Boulder City. Aircraft is the Airbus EC-130 EcoStar, with oversized windows, climate control and a Bose headset that pipes in multilingual narration and music.

En route the helicopter passes over the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Colorado River and the Mojave Desert before reaching Grand Canyon West. Because this is Hualapai tribal land rather than the national park, the pilot is allowed to descend below the rim, sweeping close to the cliff faces and formations around Eagle Point and Guano Point for the trip's signature views. It is a pure flyover, though, so you never leave the aircraft.

The honest caveats: there is no landing, no ground time and no meal, so a long half-day buys you about 70 minutes of flying, and it is expensive at from around $419. Photos live and die by the weather, so a clear, low-haze day matters, and anyone prone to motion sickness should prepare. If you want the aerial spectacle and the below-the-rim close-ups without the cost or time of a landing tour, it delivers; if you want to stand in the canyon, book a landing flight instead.
