The Grand Canyon West Rim & Hoover Dam Combo is a long, guided day trip from Las Vegas that packs two of the region's signature landmarks into one itinerary. Pickup is from most Strip hotels in an air-conditioned luxury vehicle, and the drive out crosses the Mojave Desert past a 900-year-old Joshua Tree forest before reaching Grand Canyon West on Hualapai tribal land.

At the West Rim you get roughly three hours to walk Eagle Point and Guano Point, taking in the panoramic canyon views and Hualapai cultural displays; the glass Skywalk is available for an extra fee paid on site. On the way back the tour spends a full hour at the Hoover Dam on a VIP exterior tour, taking in the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman bridge walkway 900 feet above the Colorado River and the top of the dam itself, then stops in the historic old town of Boulder City. Breakfast snacks, lunch and bottled water are included.

The honest trade-off is the length: pickups start around 7am and you are back near 5:30pm, with roughly five hours of that spent driving. Is this the same as the Grand Canyon South Rim?

No. This tour visits Grand Canyon West on Hualapai tribal land, not the national park. The West Rim is closer to Las Vegas (roughly 130 miles, about a two-hour drive before pickups) and is where the Skywalk and Eagle Point are; the more famous South Rim vistas are a longer, separate trip.

Does the price include the Skywalk glass bridge?

Walking on the Skywalk cantilever is an optional add-on paid separately at the canyon, so budget extra if you want to do it. Eagle Point, Guano Point and the canyon viewpoints themselves are covered by the tour. Cell phones are allowed out on the glass; cameras, purses and backpacks go in a free locker.

Do you actually go inside the Hoover Dam?

Not inside. The stop is a VIP exterior tour running about an hour, covering the bridge walkway 900 feet above the Colorado River and the top of the dam with views over Lake Mead. For the ticketed powerplant tour underground, plan a dedicated Hoover Dam trip; the Bureau of Reclamation sells it at $25 for adults and $15 for ages 4 to 16.

How long is the day and how much of it is driving?

Expect about ten and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, with roughly five hours of total driving. It is a full commitment, so it suits travelers with one whole free day rather than an afternoon.

When is the best time of year to go?

Spring and autumn give the clearest air and mildest temperatures. Summer days can top 100 F at the canyon with more haze, so an early departure and plenty of water matter most then.
