Hoover Dam Raft Tour

The Hoover Dam Raft Tour is a calm-water float down the Black Canyon stretch of the Colorado River, on the flat water immediately below the Hoover Dam. Run by Black Canyon River Adventures, it uses a motorized (not paddle) raft, so it plays as easy scenic sightseeing for all ages rather than a whitewater trip. The base adult rate covers the river trip only: you drive yourself to the check-in point in Boulder City, and round-trip transport from Las Vegas is a paid add-on.

From check-in the group descends Lower Portal Road, the service road the dam's builders used, to launch right at the base of the dam. Over roughly three hours on the water you drift downstream beneath canyon walls that rise nearly 2,000 feet, stopping at a sheltered side beach for a swim. Bighorn sheep, osprey and herons are often spotted along the way, and a box lunch is included.

One thing that worries people needlessly: Lake Mead's long decline, sitting near 1,062 feet in the most recent Reclamation reading, has no bearing on this trip. The raft runs on the river below the dam, where flows are managed by releases rather than reservoir level, and no closures affect Black Canyon river access.

The trade-offs are real: the float is gentle rather than an adrenaline ride, departures run Wednesday through Sunday rather than daily, and summer heat in the canyon is intense. Add the Las Vegas transfer and three hours on the river becomes closer to a six-hour day, most of the extra time spent driving and staging. For travelers who want the Hoover Dam from water level with minimal effort it's a relaxed half-day; thrill-seekers should look elsewhere.
