Valley of Fire and Lost City Museum Tour

This full-day trip pairs Nevada's oldest state park with a small archaeology museum roughly an hour northeast of the Strip. Valley of Fire covers more than 40,000 acres of Aztec sandstone that glows deep red and orange in the low sun, dotted with formations like Elephant Rock and Atlatl Rock and marked with petroglyphs left by the ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) people who once lived here.

The day runs in a seven-passenger luxury 4x4 SUV with hotel pickup and drop-off, departing at 8am and back around 3pm, three days a week: Thursday, Friday and Sunday. In the park you make short, easy walks to the highlights, view the ancient rock art, and stop for a boxed lunch; unlimited snacks and bottled water are provided. The tour then continues to the Lost City Museum in Overton, where a guided visit puts the petroglyphs in context with pottery, baskets, arrowheads and tools, plus pueblo foundations the museum building was raised over to protect.

The trade-offs are real: it is a long day with a fair amount of driving each way, the museum itself is modest and takes under an hour, and the park bakes in summer with little shade, so late spring and fall are far more comfortable. The three-day schedule also rules out a lot of short trips.
