Hoover Dam Sunset Tour with BBQ Dinner

Hoover Dam Sunset Tour with BBQ Dinner

Annie Bananie's four-hour evening run to Hoover Dam in a 14-passenger van: barbecue dinner at Rick's Rollin Smoke first, then Hemenway Park's bighorn sheep, the Lake Mead overlook, a walk across the dam and the Memorial Bridge at dusk. $99, departs Treasure Island at 6 PM.

Is the Hoover Dam Sunset BBQ Tour Worth It? What You See and What You Miss

This is the evening version of Annie Bananie's small-group Hoover Dam run, and the order is the point: dinner first, dam at sunset. The 14-passenger van leaves Treasure Island at 6 PM daily from the benches along Mystère Dreams Avenue, heads downtown for a barbecue plate at Rick's Rollin Smoke, the tavern next to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop of Pawn Stars fame, then drives out to Boulder City. The plate is St. Louis ribs, a chopped brisket slider, smoked mac and cheese and pickles with one well shot, domestic beer or soft drink; vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free plates can be requested. After dinner the route stops at Hemenway Park, where desert bighorn sheep often graze the lawns, the Lake Mead overlook, a guided walk across the top of Hoover Dam, and the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which stands about 900 feet above the Colorado River with the dam lit below.

The whole thing takes about four hours and costs $99 a head, the same price the operator lists itself. The operator recommends ages 5 and up and allows no lap children, walking is light to moderate, and large backpacks, luggage and coolers are banned because the dam's security checkpoint will not pass them. The tour runs only when a minimum number of guests have booked.

What you give up for the evening slot is the inside of the dam: there is no power plant or visitor center on this itinerary, and in winter the 6 PM departure means you arrive after dark, so the sunset in the name is a spring-to-fall feature. In July and August, when the daytime dam is a 105-degree walk, the evening timing is the better deal. The sister daytime tour with BBQ lunch follows the same stops in daylight.

Insider tipCheck the sunset time for your date before you book: in October it is around 6:15 PM and you reach the dam in the afterglow, which is the photo you want; by December the sun is down before dinner ends and the dam is seen floodlit, which is a different trip.

Frequently asked questions

Do you go inside Hoover Dam?

No. The evening tour walks across the top of the dam and stops at the overlooks and the Memorial Bridge; the power plant tour and visitor center are daytime-only federal operations and are not part of this itinerary.

Will I actually see the sunset at the dam?

Between roughly April and September, yes: dinner ends with daylight to spare and the dam stop lands around dusk. From November to February the sun sets before 5 PM, so you see the dam floodlit instead.

What is the barbecue like?

A fixed plate rather than a menu: ribs, a brisket slider, smoked mac and cheese and pickles, with one drink included. Dietary versions exist if you ask when booking. Rick's Rollin Smoke sits next to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, so the stop doubles as a Pawn Stars photo op.

Where does the tour leave from?

Treasure Island on the Strip, from the benches along Mystère Dreams Avenue beside the hotel, at 6 PM. There is no other pickup point, so plan a rideshare if you are staying elsewhere.

How much walking is there?

Light to moderate: the stroll across the dam and back is the longest stretch, on flat pavement, plus short walks at the park and the bridge. The van is not wheelchair accessible.
