How far is the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas, and how do you get there without a car?
1 answer
About 35 miles southeast of the Strip, a 45-minute drive. Without a car, a coach tour with hotel pickup is the practical way; a rideshare gets you there easily but getting back is the problem.
Without a car
- Coach tour: four to five hours with hotel pickup, and most include the Powerplant Tour. Combined with the Grand Canyon West Rim it becomes a full day.
- Rideshare: roughly $40 to $60 each way, but few drivers wait at the dam, the return pickup can take a long time and you pay surge for it. Agree a return with the same driver or stay flexible.
- Public bus: none to the dam itself.
What it costs once you are there
- Walking the crest and the Memorial Bridge: free, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
- Visitor Center: $15. Powerplant Tour: $25, or $15 for ages 4 to 16. Both 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The $40 Guided Dam Tour: suspended since August 19, 2026 for elevator repairs, no restart date.
- Parking: $10 in the Nevada garage; some Arizona-side lots are free with a longer, hotter walk.
Good to know: summer on the crest hits 110°F with no shade, every visitor goes through airport-style security, and the dam closes to visitors on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Boulder City, fifteen minutes back toward Las Vegas, is the lunch stop.
